When you walk through the door after coming home from work, you notice your furnace making a whining noise. By the time you walk over to it, the noise stops. As soon as you get snuggled into bed at night, though, you start to hear a grinding noise coming from the furnace. You get out of bed and make your way to the heating system knowing that unusual sounds indicate problems that just don’t go away on their own.
Strange noises coming from the furnace in your Childersburg, Alabama, home are never a good thing and should be inspected as soon as possible. Here are some HVAC noises and their possible causes.
Furnace Is Making a Banging Noise
Do you notice the furnace taking several minutes to kick on after you turn it on? If so, this could be a sign the burners are dirty. This type of delayed ignition is dangerous because it causes gas to build up. Finally, once it does kick on, you’ll hear a loud banging noise. Essentially, it’s as if a tiny explosion has occurred inside the heating system. Even a small explosion can cause the heat exchanger to crack, which can lead to costly repairs.
Furnace Is Making a Grinding Noise
Your furnace has a blower wheel inside of it. If you hear grinding noises coming from the heating system, you should turn it off immediately and have it inspected. There’s a good chance the blower wheel has come loose. A professional HVAC contractor can perform a simple repair to tighten the blower wheel. In some instances, the blower wheel might need to be replaced. The motor mount could also be loose, which can result in the whole blower assembly dropping and hitting the housing. Having it fixed ASAP is the best move to make.
